Updated software

I tried to e-file a 1040 today and got a message that I needed to update the software, so I did. Now I am getting critical diagnostics saying that my dispositions on Schedule D have no dates. For years, we have marked covered sales as either long term or short term with no dates and never had an issue (including many previous returns this year). Any idea why this was changed?

I have no idea, but for years I have never used the long term short term codes. I enter -010100 as purchase date and -0102 (it fills in current year) for sale date for all long term sales. In enter -0101 (it fills in current year) for purchase date and -0102 (it fills in current year) for the sale date for all short term. The result is the Schedule D shows various and puts then in the proper place.

Here's wishing you many Happy Returns
