I just tried filing a 2021 tax return for a deceased taxpayer IRS will not accept saying they have been informed from SSA that the SS# is of a deceased person.  Any ideas why this changed?

After a certain amount of time the SSN of a deceased person is locked.

Return will need to be filed on paper.

Paper file

SSA & IRS do this because of potential identity theft

Thanks.  I have never had this happen before, but it is a 2021 return.

They cancel the SS# after a certain amount of time so a fraudulent return can't be filed.  You will need to mail in the return.
