I was working with one open. I keep getting "You must file an amended return with this return!!

It sounds like you need to talk with support. If you are getting that message, it tells ME that you have already filed a return for that person.
You can not DELETE a return.

One more possibility is to look at the PROFILE to see if there are check marks for e-filing amended returns. If so, remove the check mark. Some other users have encountered this problem.
