Supporting Detail doesn't allow negative numbers per line

bzwillin

Most supporting detail screens allow for negative adjustments which is sometimes need to move a value to another line.  I don't need the total of all the supporting detail to be negative, just be able to have negative adjustment against total entered to be a lesser value.  For instance, I might have 4 lines of detail 5000, 10000, 15000, -3000 for a total of 27000.   In know this works on screen 19 for sure for Individuals.  However, it doesn't work in Partnerships (Screen 12); SCorps (Screen 18) or Fiduciary (Screen 24).  I get DATA ENTRY ERROR, value must be between 1 and 999,999,999, which it will but not on a specific line of detail.

This was working in 2019 and prior version versions and was changed in 2020 and forward for some reason.

Thanks for the feedback and details.

In order to conform with Federal and state agency requirements and also to achieve high e-file acceptance rates, we are unable to make blanket program changes to allow negative numbers on all input fields.

However, we can look on a case-by-case basis at selected input fields within the software to determine if changes could be made which do not conflict with either Federal and/or state requirements for both print and electronic filing.

In order to review, please provide the following information:
-Tax module (Individual, Partnership, etc.)
-Agency (Federal) (State)
-Screen Number
-Input field Description
-Code Number.

Screen Number, Section Description and Code Number can be obtained by clicking on an input field and pressing F1. This will open the Lacerte Help Center and the Input Field, Screen Number and Code can be copied and pasted into Lacerte Feedback topic. Example here:

Yep... this issues was beat to death last year.  To no avail, of course as Intuit knows much, MUCH more about how to actually prepare returns in the real world.

An extremely frustrating & unnecessary inconvenience!!!!!!!!!

Yes - frustrating and inefficient to have to use a sticky note or type in the text area what you could really do right in the supporting detail amount column.

Lacerte please take this suggestion. It would help in preparing proper tax returns.

This option will allow for faster, more efficient, more detailed, improved accuracy with return preparation -- software that improves work flow is highly valuable!

It only makes sense...

This should be a no-brainer.  This allows preparers to better trace steps and calculations to speed up efficiency and accuracy.

This will take time, but in my original post I mentioned what screens and in what modules.  However, I did not provide the input field and code number.  This is for the supporting detail input fields and we don't want the sum to be negative, but be able to enter a number and on other lines make positive and negative adjustments to get to the correct positive number to add.  The issue was that something change with Lacerte that caused the screens that were not Individuals after 2019 to no longer work.  Is there a more efficient way to send this to you as it will be easiest to enter into a spreadsheet, but don't see how to upload this here.  Please contact me with instructions on how to upload this.
