Installing old releases of Lacerte software

I am installing and old Lacerte program for the first time.  Do I need to download the 'prep' file and where do I need to put it.

You put in in your program directory. Generally C:\LACERTE\YYTAX\

I forgot to mention that this is a network install, so does the prep file need to be stored on the server?

The prep file has to go on every computer, and on the server.

Depending on how old of a release you are installing, you make have to download your prep file to a folder and then physically copy/paste each year into the each year.  (from personal experience...I've had it happen when trying to install old years...YMMV).
