New Child & Dependent Care Expenses (Form 2441) instructions

Al Kay

For this year among the many changes to Form 2441 (and the actual credit/exclusion benefit) there is one that is probably below the radar: For both Part 1 (Persons or Organizations Who Provided the Care) & Line 2 (Information about your qualifying person(s)) besides the room to report 3 (instead of 2) providers or Qualifying persons there is a new check box by each that states: If you have more than three care providers/qualifying persons, see the instructions and check this box . Well the instructions by both state that the 3 slots on the actual form have to be the 3 highest amounts (the three highest paid providers/the three people with the highest qualifying expenses). However Proseries as in the past is just printing the order the providers are entered on the  form and dependents on the Information Worksheet. My suggestion is that it should sort it as stated in the instructions by highest amounts. (While ordering the providers manually may not be such a big deal, the order of dependents affect many other parts of a return i.e. EIC, CTC etc.) and to have to manually change the ordering besides the pain can also mess up other parts of the return).
