military husband and wife tax filing

Summit1
Level 5

Husband and wife both received military pay. One W-2 has State Withholding in AL and the other in GA.In 2020 someone else prepared their returns using MFS status. In 2020 one had income in AL and the other in GA. They both actually lived in SC on the base. In January 2021 they moved to GA but one still has AL income and the other GA income. I was going to file a joint return for them and then GA and AL state returns exempting the GA income from AL and the AL from GA. I don't know why the military does their W-2's this way.

I have not had experience with military returns but I was looking for advice and wonder if I am looking at this correctly.

Military personnel have a state of residence that does not change when their duty station changes.

You have one spouse who is a resident of AL and the other of GA.

Prepare the return accordingly. Most states discuss military personnel in their instructions.
