If reject code is R0000-507-01 with multiple dependents how do I determine which SSN is in error?

There are 3 dependents in return, description of error reads Dependent SSN in Dependent Detail on the return was used as a dependent SSN on a previously filed tax return for the same tax period.

In the description line of the rejection (you will need to print or view the entire rejection message) look for the number(s) in square brackets [1] that designates which dependent is involved.

Probably the college kid who filed for his own $1,800

Anyone else that could claim the child or child filed their own return claiming exemption? If you find out who claimed the exemption you’ll have to file an amendment and paper file for your client. If not, paper file with documentation that your client is entitled to claim the child.

note... if you’re looking for a refund quickly, efile with the two kids then file the amendments to add the 3rd later.

If at first you don’t succeed…..find a workaround

So far, no dependent filed return and no non-custodial parent.  I really appreciate the quick refund idea!

Thanks.
