I submitted a return and federal was rejected the return for name and social mismatch but NY accepted, I thought NY acceptance required federal acceptance.

That is usually the case. Especially when it comes to the social security numbers. Not sure why it went through.

NY is an independent state, Does not rely on Federal.

If at first you don’t succeed…..find a workaround

You EFiled them together at the same time?  When I EF fed and state at once, if fed rejects, then state is auto rejected.

Do you have a copy of client's SS card and did you file using the name and SS exactly as it shows on the card?

What was on the prior year return?
