I have a 0 where the spouses name should be, but there is no spouse, single return and i can't get rid of it

Did you accidently click MFJ or MFS?  Did you enter a W-2 or some other worksheet and accidently click the "spouse" box?

Sometimes quirky things like this happen.  I'd try selecting MFJ, then see if you can delete the 0, then switch the filing status back to Single.
