1040-X and Superseded Return

This is probably a stupid question but, why does a 1040-X need to be completed with a superseded return? It's treated as a new original not an amended return.

I think it is a ProSeries thing, not an IRS thing.

Up until this year, there was no way to designate an e-filed 1040 as "superseded", and the IRS won't allow duplicate submissions, so the 1040X was a way to tell the IRS it was a superseding return.

But now that 1040s have a way to indicate they are superseding return, a 1040X shouldn't be necessary.

Is there a box on the 1040 now to show its superseded?  I haven't noticed.

There is a box on the federal info worksheet near the bottom of section three to check for a  superseded return

Yes, there is. The issue I am referring to is that you have to also generate a 1040-X.

Take a look at the ProSeries article about e-filing a superseded return.

I meant on the 1040 itself, nothing on it designates that its superseded return.

That is correct. No checkbox for that.
