State Part Year Residency Dates - Make Entry Uniform

cpataxpro

CA part-year data entry is clear and says: "Period of CA Residency." OH is totally unclear and says: "Part Year Residents" PROBLEM: If you enter the state as OH and the OH residency dates, the e-file rejects with Code: OH-IT 1040-041 which is unclear as to what the solutiuon might be. If you take a SWAG and enter CA and the CA dates of residency, then OH lists the correct dates of residency on the OH Schedule of Credits. IDEA: Either make the entry screens similar or put a help message there or at a minimum put a help article ouyt there updated for this issue ... the current articles are too simplistic. Thanks.

I would propose a uniform input field like:

CA 01/01/2023 05/21/2023
OH 05/22/2023 08/29/2023
CA 08/30/2023 12/31/2023

Currently the software and state forms cannot handle two periods of residency, which is rare but happens.

Agree with you the input is not the most intuitive.

But if you had checked the return and reviewed IT NRC, which is where the residency info is reported, you should have noticed that the input is for the other state's residency period rather than OH's and that ProConnect Tax would subtract that to arrive at the OH residency period to show on the form.  You wouldn't then have to wait for the return to be rejected to find out.

Ultimately, it's PBKAC.

I like the uniform entry idea if that were possible, but I also understand the limitations of the software for the price. The overall process of state allocations and the tax calculations were spot on. The problem I had was with pinning down the reject.

As for itonewbies rather sanctimonious comments, please note:

1) All forms were calculating correctly both before and after the Ohio part-year date fix, there was no warning diagnostic, there is no instruction at the point of entry, there are no current Help instructions or articles on this matter, and both the reject problem and solution texts were overly general with no clear fixes.

2) Two PTO reps used Smart View, reviewed the forms, and searched the Help articles and were unable to suggest a fix. We had to try various hit and miss entry changes, including override fields, before stumbling upon the date problem in the Ohio Schedule of Credits form.

3) Unlike some tax preparers, I have a life. That life does not include combing through dense tax forms looking for arcane state and local instruction nuances ... I expect my tax software to handle those duties. It's 2024.

4) The return in question was for tax year 2022. The IT-NRC for Ohio in PTO does not show those date fields at the top of the form for 2022.

5) As for the rather snide, trolling acronym, I think we all know where I would like that entered.

Constructive, civil comments only please. Thanks all.

Not so sure your clients and your E&O underwriter would agree with that when something goes wrong.  When you are supposed to be able to fully rely on software, that's the day AI will replace us.

That's just the harsh reality, my friend.
