MFS For CT Return

Frankyg
Level 1

I have a client that files Jointly for Federal purposes but needs to file MFS in CT for Taxpayer.  There does not seem to be an easy way to do this without creating a 2nd file and stripping out the Spouses information in order to file the CT return.

This seems to be a system issue....

Any suggestions as to a fix from Intuit as opposed to a workaround that I have....

Thanks

@Frankyg This is a pretty common situation where some states allow some flexibility. When a state does allow a filing status change you'll see the option available in Screen 3, Miscellaneous, as well as additional input options in Screens 55, Part Year Residency.

Connecticut doesn't offer the filing status override in Screen 3. However, there are some nonresident part year resident entries in Screen 55 that I'm testing for you.

After reviewing further, your best bet is going to be to create a MFJ return for Federal purposes and utilize the check boxes available in Screen 1, Filing Status.  Here you can check "MFJ vs MFS Comparison" and "Live With Spouse?" if applicable.

This will create a MFJ/MFS Wksht where you can verify the amounts going to each person when split to MFS.  Any adjustments should be made using the T or S indicators within each field (or TP SP columns in certain input screens).

Once complete you can click the "Click here to split this return" located at the top of the worksheet. This will result in 3 files: 1= MFJ Federal 2= MFS Taxpayer 3= MFS Spouse.

Select the applicable split spouse to add CT to for the purpose of filing the state.
