Can refereeing/umpiring collegiate athletics be reported on Schedule C?

Clients earning more than $15,000 from refereeing and I'd like to be able to deduct their business expenses. I'm not sure that this meets the definition of a trade or business and I would like to know how other accountants are handling this.
