The following critical diagnostic is generating, preventing return to be e-filed: e:file: Form 5471 #1: The "Reference ID number" of the person filing Form 5471 is invalid. Reference ID number will no longer have the option to enter "FOREIGN US" or "APPLIED FOR". Instead, if the person filing Form 5471 does not have an EIN/SSN, a reference ID number that uniquely identifies the foreign entity, for which such number is requested, must be entered.

So make up a reference ID number and enter it.

To clarify, the client is not an officer, director, or shareholder in a foreign corporation, so there was no reason to generate Form 5471.  A made up number would have generated the Form. 

I called tech support yesterday and they had me do a work-around, as they did not understand what caused the issue upon examining the client file.

The work-around was E-file > e-file Support Tools > Disable e-file Error
