I hope everyone realizes that if this post is still floating around on the internet in a few years, some kid is going to find this and ask his parents - "what's a pencil?".

"Jim possibly has a split personality disorder?" But everybody here has some type of disorder.  Why else would we be in this profession? 🤔
Based on prior posts, I think CA is home for both of you.
Have you researched whether or not the dependent care credit is refundable?

I don't think their grades were fixed, but they might have been "repaired" 🤣

Punch cards😬   That brings back bad memories of trying to do that in college without any experience working with punch cards.  We had to create something in a finance class when most of the class had no experience --------- or any clue what we had to do.  The instructor either didn't notice or didn't care since I believe two kids knew what they were doing and everyone else in the class just got copies of what they did.  That's pretty much the extent of my cheating in college goes.  Should I turn in my CPA certificate now since that obviously would not look well on an ethics exam.

I believe there are 19 states that can be e-filed compared to less than a half dozen when it first became available.  So little by little they are expanding that feature.  But for what it is worth, I don't file many amended returns but when I do I have never had any issues with a client wondering why the Minnesota amended return couldn't be e-filed.  If a client gets that bent over shape over that issue, they really aren't a good client to keep around.
"It should be simple and fast"  It should be, but not when Intuit is involved in the process. 😀
I know the typical arrangement is a pay per return, but I get excited when someone says free and Intuit in the same breath.

A lot of people have left Intuit for greener pastures and a lot of people have left those greener pastures for Intuit.  Depending on the complexity of the returns that you do Drake is economy priced so you could add that to your list of other softwares to review.
How did you end up with free service?  Intuit isn't exactly known as being a charitable organization.
She spoke to several accountants and either talked to idiots or didn’t give the full story.  Good luck on this one!

The age old saying is the customer is always right.  But that saying doesn't apply to tax preparation.  Tell them that if they wanted the full exclusion they should never have rented the place.  If they don't like that answer, tell them that they are free to leave and try to find someone that will prepare an incorrect return for them if that is what they really want.  Also tell them that cell 103 has the best view in their local federal prison.
Hopefully there wasn't a big learning curve for the new pencils 😉
I said I was curious, I didn't say it was impossible. 😁
A lot of clients have not seen it happen, but a good number have seen it happen for those states?
