Amending Form 1041 for an Estate or Trust in Lacerte

Before you start: 

  • If you wish to keep the original return, please make a copy of the client file and make changes to the copied file. See How to make a copy of a client in Lacerte for details.
  • You can e-file amended 1041 tax returns for tax year 2023, 2022 and 2021.

Follow these steps to amend a Form 1041 for e-file:

  1. Go to Screen 74, 1041 Amended Return
  2. Check the box, Amended return (MANDATORY)
  3. Enter the Tax paid with original return, if applicable.
    • This amount will adjust any balance due on the Client Letter.
  4. Enter the Overpayment from original return, if applicable.
    • This amount will adjust any balance due on the Client Letter.
  5. If you are amending Form 1041 due to missing Elections, check the box Filing pursuant to section 301.9100-2.
  6. Select Add from the left navigation panel.
  7. Enter the Description.
    • This should be a description for the amount that changed on the amended return.
  8. Enter the Line number.
    • This should be the line number for the amount that changed on the amended return.
  9. Enter the Original amount.
  10. Enter the Amended amount.
  11. Enter the explanation for the amendment in the field Explanation (Ctrl+E).
    • Note: This explanation will be included with the e-file, but will not appear in the Forms view.
  12. Select OK to save the explanation.
  13. Select Add from the left navigation panel to add additional amounts and line changes from the original return.
  14. Go to the various input screens to change/add the amounts from the original return
  15. Go to Screen 12, Estimates (1041-ES).
  16. Scroll down to the Additional Estimated Tax Payments Amount Paid subsection.
  17. Enter the Amount paid, if applicable.
    • See the 1041 form instructions below for more information.
    • You can use Crtl+E to open the Supporting Detail window. Click on the radial button for Statement. Any text description entered will flow with the amount to the return as supporting detail.
  1. Go to Screen 74, 1041 Amended Return
  2. Check the box, Amended return (MANDATORY)
  3. Enter the Tax paid with original return, if applicable.
    • This amount will adjust any balance due on the Client Letter.

    • This should be a description for the amount that changed on the amended return.
  8. Enter the Line number.
    • This should be the line number for the amount that changed on the amended return.
  9. Enter the Original amount.
  10. Enter the Amended amount.
  11. Select Add from the left navigation panel to add additional amounts and line changes from the original return.
  12. Go to the various input screens to change/add the amounts from the original return
  13. Go to Screen 51, Notes.
  14. Select Statement from the left navigation panel.
  15. Enter the explanation for amending the return.
    • This will appear in the statements, to be included with the paper filing of the amended return.
  16. Go to Screen 12, Estimates (1041-ES).
  17. Scroll down to the Additional Estimated Tax Payments Amount Paid subsection.
  18. Enter the Amount paid, if applicable.
    • See the 1041 form instructions below for more information.
    • You can use Crtl+E to open the Supporting Detail window. Click on the radial button for Statement. Any text description entered will flow with the amount to the return as supporting detail.

Per the 1041 instructions:

If the total tax on line 23 is larger on the amended return than on the original return, you generally should pay the difference with the amended return. However, you should adjust this amount if there is any increase or decrease in the total payments shown on line 25.

Attach a sheet that explains the reason for the amendments and identifies the lines and amounts being changed on the amended return.

  1. Go to Screen 2.1 Miscellaneous Information.
  2. Locate the Estate/Trust Information section.
  3. Check the box, Amended return.
    • This will check the Amended return box on Form 1041, page 1.
  4. Go to the various input screens to change/add the amounts from the original return.
  5. Go to Screen 51, Notes.
  6. Select Statement from the left navigation panel.
  7. Enter the explanation for amending the return.
  8. Go to Screen 12, Estimates (1041-ES).
  9. Scroll down to the Additional Estimated Tax Payments Amount Paid subsection.
  10. Enter the Amount paid.
    • Note: You can use Ctrl+E to open the Supporting Detail window. Click on the radial button for Statement. Any text description entered will flow with the amount to the return as supporting detail.
  11. Go to Screen 3.1, Invoice, Letter, Filing Instructions.
  12. Scroll down to the Client Letter section.
  13. Locate the Amended Only subsection.
  14. Enter the Tax paid with original return.
  15. Enter the Overpayment from original return.

Notes:

  • The amounts entered in steps 15 and 16 will print on the client letter only and will not be carried to the tax return itself.
  • Prior to 2014, Amended Form 1041 cannot be e-filed. The e-file Amended Return Wizard has been activated in the 2013 Intuit ProConnect Lacerte Tax program for e-filing an amended Form 114 only.
