Client had me do an S-Corp filing, but it was rejected.  Error says the return type must match what the IRS has in their records.  He thought it was an S-Corp but it's obviously not.

How can he find out this info so we can file the right form?

He can ask the IRS:

When does client think he filed the S election?

Can he produce his copy?

The client should have received a letter from the IRS when the business was started informing them of their filing obligations which therefore would indicate their entity status

Which is not dispositive. If it was filled out wrong, the info on the letter will be wrong.

I've had to do this a number of times, for "not for profit" entities that claimed they were charitable, but turned out not to be NFP under 501(c)(3). One was an S Corp, in fact.
