For years I've created my own customized 1040 cover letter for each client. My issue is with state names.  Most states are fine, but District of Columbia and some others that are long in length throw off my tabs. I cannot find a way to present MD, DC, VA, etc. in the letter automatically.  Anyone out there know a state code for this?

And why is abbreviation so long of a word when it's trying to shorten the word???
