working on a 2020 tax projection for a MFJ taxpayer with $77,000 taxable income.

Regular income tax calculation is ZERO.    can someone tell me why?

What does that 77K consist of?  what type of income?

You may want to just use the 2020 program rather than the tax planner in the 2019 program, might be easier to follow the money.

77k consists of interest and dividends.  no earned income.

i always use the prior year planner for estimate calc's.

i'm more interested in understanding the calculation than anything.  or what I'm not understanding.

Qualified dividends may be the answer...look for the Qualified Dividends and Capital Gains Worksheet...see if that helps it make sense.
