We are using the Lacerte Tax Planner for the first time this tax season and planning for the 2018 tax season and by and large it works pretty well, however we have noticed the "basic letter" is pulling in 2017 data instead of the data from the 2018 projections we are doing. Is there a different template or a way to fix this?

Go to Reports > Letter/Document Setup > Templates > Basic Letter > Edit  - Now the fun part. The letter you refer to is likely pulling from column1, you probably want column2.

I don't like tax planner, so I didn't go beyond that. Mess with the letters, key words, etc until you either get what you want, or like me give up and use a different software (I use Tax Tools)

Good Luck.

I like the sarcasm and I got to the same point. It took a few minutes but I was able how to figure out how to change the data. WHY would it default to putting in 2017 when we are planning for 2018?! Grrrr...

The default is column 1?
All of Lacerte (except the tax program) is off a year. You plan 2018 in the 2017 Lacerte Tax Planner. You send the 2018 Organizer in the 2017 Lacerte Tax Program. You prepare the 2018 tax return in the 2018 Lacerte Tax Program. Go figure!
