October is always a pivotal month for tax professionals, given the number of extensions you may have filed for your individual clients. Get a full list of tax and compliance deadlines for October 2020 to keep your clients compliant.

In October, it’s recommended that you:

  • Conduct year-end tax planning sessions with individual clients.
  • Remind individual clients to use flexible spending account funds before year end unless their plan provides a post year-end grace period or carryover.
  • File returns for individual clients who obtained automatic six-month extensions.
  • Renew Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN) for 2021.

Key Compliance Dates:

Friday, Oct. 2 – Semiweekly depositors deposit FICA and withheld income tax on wages paid on Sept. 26-29.

Wednesday, Oct. 7 – Semiweekly depositors deposit FICA and withheld income tax on wages paid on Sept. 30-Oct. 2.

Friday, Oct. 9 – Semiweekly depositors deposit FICA and withheld income tax on wages paid on Oct. 3-6.

Tuesday, Oct. 13 – Tipped employees who received $20 or more in tips during September report them to the employer on Form 4070, Employee’s Report of Tips to Employer.

Thursday, Oct. 15:

  • Individuals file 2019 income tax return if an automatic six-month extension was obtained.
  • Monthly depositors deposit FICA and withheld income tax for September.
  • Semiweekly depositors deposit FICA and withheld income tax on wages paid on Oct. 7-9.

Friday, Oct. 16 – Semiweekly depositors deposit FICA and withheld income tax on wages paid on Oct. 10-13.

Wednesday, Oct. 21 – Semiweekly depositors deposit FICA and withheld income tax on wages paid on Oct. 14-16.

Friday, Oct. 23 – Semiweekly depositors deposit FICA and withheld income tax on wages paid on Oct. 17-20.

Wednesday, Oct. 28 – Semiweekly depositors deposit FICA and withheld income tax on wages paid on Oct. 21-23.

Friday, Oct. 30 – Semiweekly depositors deposit FICA and withheld income tax on wages paid on Oct. 14-27.

Note: Because Oct. 31 falls on a Saturday, end-of-month filings are pushed to Monday, Nov. 2.
