How to create a custom strategy in Intuit Tax Advisor

If you have a strategy you believe would benefit others, share it in our Intuit Tax Advisor Idea Exchange so others can vote on your great idea.

Custom strategies will be available to add to your other clients. Keep in mind if they wouldn't apply, they won't be available to add for the client. For example, a strategy that would change a Schedule C can't be added to a plan where there is no Schedule C.

How to create a custom strategy:

  1. Select View tax plan.
    • It doesn't matter if the strategy will be used on the plan you enter to create your strategy.
  2. Go to the Strategies tab.
  3. Select All strategies.
  4. Choose Create a custom strategy.
  5. Save can't be selected until the required fields are completed:
    • Strategy name: This will show as the name of the strategy. You'll want to pick something that is descriptive but short. Keep in mind it'll appear in the Client report in the Tax plan section as a header for the page advising of the strategy.
    • Description: This description will appear in the Client report in the Tax plan.
    • The Tax return impact section needs to be completed to let Intuit Tax Advisor know what the strategy will make changes to:
      • Impacted form or schedule
      • Impacted field
      • How will the strategy change affect the impacted field?
    • Applicable rates: Check the desired rates to apply to the Strategy tax savings formula. A minimum of one selection is required.
  6. Enter Client action items and Net out-of-pocket formula, if applicable. Keep in mind the Client action items will appear in the How to get started section of the Tax Plan for the page advising of the strategy.
  7. Press Save.

How to use a custom strategy:

  1. Select View tax plan for the desired plan.
  2. Go to the Strategies tab.
  3. Select All Strategies.
  4. Custom strategies will be in their own section at the top. Press Add.
  5. Enter the 2022 Strategy change amount.

How to change a custom strategy:

If you had unexpected results, need to correct a typo, or make other changes to a custom strategy, complete the following steps:

  1. Select View tax plan.
    • It doesn't matter if the strategy will be used on the plan you enter to revise your strategy.
  2. Go to the Strategies tab.
  3. Select All strategies.
  4. Click on the name of your custom strategy.
  5. From the vertical dots menu, select Edit.
  6. Make the desired changes, then Save.

How to delete a custom strategy:

  1. Select View tax plan.
  2. Go to the Strategies tab.
  3. Select All strategies.
  4. Click on the name of your custom strategy.
  5. From the vertical dots menu, select Archive.
