E-filing Superseded Returns in ProConnect Tax

SOLVEDby Intuit48Updated 2 weeks ago

ProConnect supports the e-filing of superseding 1065, 1120, 1120S, and 1041 returns for tax year 2021 and later, as well as 1040 returns for tax year 2022 onward. These may be e-filed only during their original filing period, and is for federal returns only.

A superseded return is a return filed subsequent to the originally-filed return and filed within the filing period. Down below we'll go over how to file this type of return.

If you receive an error message along the lines of "You currently don't have permissions to [action]. Contact your firm's Admin for authorization," either when trying to create new returns or when e-file roles have changed for tax year 2023, see here for how your firm Admin can resolve it.

For business returns tax year 2021 and later:

  1. Make a copy of the return after the initial return has been filed and accepted.
  2. Go to General Electronic Filing Superseded.
  3. Select the File superseded return box.
  4. Transmit the copied return with the superseded checkbox marked.

Note for tax years prior to 2021: ProConnect Tax does not support e-filing superseding returns if the original return was already e-filed from ProConnect Tax. These returns will be recorded as a duplicate return by the Intuit server and rejected with a transmission failure. ProConnect Tax does support the e-filing of an amended return.

For individual returns tax year 2022 and later:

  1. From the Input Return tab, go to Miscellaneous Forms  Amended Return (1040-X)/Superseded  General Information and Federal (1040X).
  2. Under the Superseded Return section, you will see the following steps:
    1. Make a copy of the return after the initial return has been filed and accepted.
    2. Mark the checkboxes to amend Federal return and to file a superseded return.
    3. Transmit the copied return as a federal amended return to efile a superseded return.
      • The copy of the return will be made automatically once you check the box for amending the individual return.
      • Do not unlock the original return to make these changes, as this may cause downstream issues in future years.
  3. Complete the above steps.
