ProConnect supports the e-filing of superseding 1065, 1120, 1120S, and 1041 returns for tax year 2021 and later, as well as 1040 returns for tax year 2022 onward. These may be e-filed only during their original filing period, and is for federal returns only.
A superseded return is a return filed subsequent to the originally-filed return and filed within the filing period. Down below we'll go over how to file this type of return.
For business returns tax year 2021 and later:
- Make a copy of the return after the initial return has been filed and accepted.
- Go to General ⮕ Electronic Filing ⮕ Superseded.
- Select the File superseded return box.
- Transmit the copied return with the superseded checkbox marked.
Note for tax years prior to 2021: ProConnect does not support e-filing superseding returns if the original return was already e-filed from ProConnect. These returns will be recorded as a duplicate return by the Intuit server and rejected with a transmission failure. ProConnect does support the e-filing of an amended return.
For individual returns tax year 2022 and later:
- From the Input Return tab, go to Miscellaneous Forms ⮕ Amended Return (1040-X)/Superseded ⮕ General Information and Federal (1040X).
- Under the Superseded Return section, you will see the following steps:
- Make a copy of the return after the initial return has been filed and accepted.
- Mark the checkboxes to amend Federal return and to file a superseded return.
- Transmit the copied return as a federal amended return to efile a superseded return.
- The copy of the return will be made automatically once you check the box for amending the individual return.
- Do not unlock the original return to make these changes, as this may cause downstream issues in future years.
- Complete the above steps.
