Troubleshooting Lacerte e-file transmission failure: error 702/707 - Program is no longer current

When attempting to electronically file a tax return, the following error messages may occur:

  • "E-file Transmission Failure: Error 702. The version of Lacerte you are using is no longer current."
  • "E-File Transmission Failure: Error 707. The tax program you are using may not be current. Please make sure that you have the latest copy of the Lacerte program installed and check to see if there are any Internet Updates available for your program."

How do I resolve these errors?

You'll need to update Lacerte before you can transmit this return.

Before you start:

  • This article references default installation paths and uses YY to reference the tax year in 20YY format. C: will always indicate the local drive and X: will always indicate the network drive.

Follow these steps to update Lacerte:

  1. Go to the Clients tab.
  2. From the Tools menu, select Lacerte Updates.
  3. Choose Update.

If you receive a message stating that No Updates are Available after clicking on Lacerte Updates, you'll need to remove the runtime.xml file, remove the SetupYY folder, and download the updates from the web.

  1. Open the Lacerte program where this issue is occurring.
  2. Hold down F10 key on your keyboard.
    • This will open the Technical Support Information window.
  3. In the System Information tab, look for the Program path and System file path.
    • Make note of both of these paths.

  1. Hold down the Windows key + R to open the Run command.
  2. In the Run command, type in the program path from step 3 and press Enter.
    • If using Windows 10, click the Windows Start button and enter the path in the search box. If on Windows 8, click the Start button or the Windows key, type in Run, and then click the icon.
  3. Locate and right-click on the runtime.xml file and select Delete.

  1. Browse to the System file path noted in step 3 using File Explorer or the Run command again.
    • See step 4 and step 5 for more instructions.
  2. Locate and and right-click the SetupYY folder and click Rename.
  3. Rename the folder to SetupYYOLD.
    • For example, for tax year 2020, this would be Setup20OLD.
  4. Proceed with the next set of instructions to download the program using Web Setup.
  1. Close Lacerte.
  2. Hold down the Windows key + R on your keyboard to open the Run command.
  3. Type C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Lacerte Shared\websetupYY.exe.
    • For 32-bit computers, run C:\Program Files\Common Files\Lacerte Shared\websetupYY.exe.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to download and install Lacerte.

After you've downloaded the program from the web, you'll have the latest version of the tax program.
