Troubleshooting large client files in Lacerte

SOLVEDby Intuit4Updated November 21, 2023

Large returns present a unique challenge for the program. Their size means that they will often be slower, and can sometimes cause unexpected behaviors.

If you are having difficulty printing, calculating, locking or working in large clients, follow the steps below to resolve the issue. After each step, attempt any of the actions you were previously unable to. If the action still fails, move on to the next step.

Partnership:

Input Screen 72, Limitation on Business Interest Expense, and uncheck the box to automatically calculate Form 8990. This checkbox causes the program to cycle through all of the calculations multiple times and can’t currently be used in conjunction with huge tax returns.

Corporation:

Input Screen 87, Limitation on Business Interest Expense, and uncheck the box to automatically calculate Form 8990. This checkbox causes the program to cycle through all of the calculations multiple times and can’t currently be used in conjunction with huge tax returns.

S Corporate:

Input Screen 80, Limitation on Business Interest Expense, and uncheck the box to automatically calculate Form 8990. This checkbox causes the program to cycle through all of the calculations multiple times and can’t currently be used in conjunction with huge tax returns.

  1. From the Settings menu, select Primary Options.
  2. From the Setup tab, locate the Program Options section.
  3. Set the Show Input Warnings in the Detail tab setting to No using the dropdown list.
  4. Click OK to save the change.
  5. In the confirmation window, make sure the Update Method is Current changes only.
  6. Click Yes.
  7. An informational window will appear stating that all users must be out of the program for the changes to take effect. Don't click OK until you have made sure all users are out of the program.
  8. Once all users are out of the program, click OK.

These changes are specific to the return type module they're accessed from. These steps will need to be repeated for each module being troubleshot.

  1. Navigate to the wYYtax.ini file.
    • Intuit Hosting users:
      1. Browse to H:\Application Data\Lacerte.
    • Other users:
      1. Press Windows+R on your keyboard.
      2. Type %appdata% in the box.
      3. Open the Lacerte folder.
  2. Open wYYtax.ini with Notepad:
    1. Select wYYtax.ini to highlight it.
    2. On the Home tab in File Explorer from the Open dropdown select Notepad.
      • If Notepad doesn’t show as a choice:
        1. Select Choose another app.
      • If Notepad does not show in the popup:
        1. Select Try an app on this PC or Choose another app.
        2. Select Notepad to highlight it.
        3. Make sure Always use this app to open .ini files is not checked.
        4. Select OK.
  3. At the bottom, add the following 2 lines:
    [JVM]
    value=1024
  4. In the File menu, select Save.

The only thing left would be to make the print job smaller by breaking up the task into multiple print jobs. While printing smaller jobs isn't ideal because it's more work, some files are too large to be processed all at once.

For federal returns:

  1. From the Print menu, navigate to Tax Return and select Partial return.
  2. Mark the US checkbox on the far left.
    • This will select all the federal forms that are generating.
  3. Try to print with just the federal forms selected.

For state returns:

  1. From the Print menu, navigate to Tax Return and select Partial return.
  2. Mark the state abbreviation checkbox on the far left for the desired state.
    • This will select all the state forms that are generating.
  3. Try to print with just the state forms selected.
  4. Repeat these set of steps for each state needed.
  1. Open Lacerte
  2. From the Settings menu, select Options.
  3. Select the Setup tab.
  4. Make note of the current data path that shows.
  5. Change the data path to C: instead of the network drive.
  6. Select OK.

We can now restore the file to the local drive.

  1. From the Client menu, select Restore
  2. Browse or type in the path from Step 2 of this section.
  3. In the list of available clients, select the one with the issue, then select OK.
  4. The client will appear in your client list and you can try to send the return again.

Note: Lacerte is always installed on the workstation and the data will be on the server. As an alternate solution to moving the data, you can install Lacerte on the server and then attempt to e-file the client while logged into the server. If you are logged into the server and the files are stored on the server, this is functionally the same as moving the data local. This also provides the added benefit of everyone being able to see the status of the E-filed return and any changes that are made to the file.
