Why are my Federal and State Filing Instructions and Slips Sheets generating but not printing any text?

Solution Description

Any checkboxes marked in the Invoice, Letter, Filing Instructions screen in the Filing Instructions sections for federal and state override the default settings and generate filing instructions for those forms only. 

If no filing instructions are generated for a form, slip sheets aren't completed either.

To check for checkboxes interfering with the default settings:

  1. Go to the Invoice, Letter, Filing Instructions screen:
    • Individual: Screen 5.1
    • Fiduciary: Screen 3.1
    • Partnership: Screen 2.1
    • Corporate: Screen 5.1
    • S-Corporate: Screen 4.1
    • Exempt Org.: Screen 3.1
    • Benefit Plan: Screen 2.1
  2. Scroll down to the Filing Instructions section and State Filing Instructions.
    • If no checkbox is checked, then filing instructions (and slip sheets) are printed only for the tax return's main form (e.g., 1040) and estimates (and the state equivalents.)
    • If some checkboxes are checked, then filing instructions and slip sheets are generated for each specified form.

For example, if the Tax Return checkbox is checked under Filing Instructions, but not under State Filing Instructions, then only federal filing instructions will be generated. (The state filing instructions will still be generated but blank.)

To print the instructions and slip sheets, either:

  • Check the Tax Return box under State Filing Instructions section, or
  • Uncheck all boxes under the Filing Instructions sections.
