  3. Click on the Automatic Extension (7004) screen.
  4. Enter a '1' in the field Print extension: 1=1065, 2=8804, 3=both.
  1. Go to the Input Return tab
  2. Navigate to the Payments, Penalties & Extensions section and expand that.

How do I file an extension?

  1. Go to the Profile tab.
  2. Check the E-FILE box for both Federal and Federal Extension.
  3. Go to the Input Return tab.
  4. On the left-side menu, select Payments, Penalties & Extensions (or select General, in a 1065 return).
  5. Click on Automatic Extension (7004).
  6. Enter a 1 in 1=automatic extension, 2=blank (MANDATORY).
  7. Go to the Check Return tab.
  8. Clear all Extension Diagnostics.
  9. Go to the File Return tab.
  10. On the left side of your screen, click E-file Extension.
  11. Click E-File Now.

Note: Choosing Start e-file Extension Wizard is critical, if Step 2: Start e-file Return Wizard is selected, the return itself--not the extension--will be transmitted. An amended return would need to be filed on paper.
