How to make a copy of a client in Lacerte

There are various reasons that could result in the need to make a copy of a return. The most common are amending, tax planning, and audits. Lacerte supports making multiple copies of the original return.

Follow these steps to make a copy of a client:

  1. Go to the Clients tab (to view the list of your clients).
  2. Select the client that needs to be copied.
  3. Select Client.
  4. Select Copy or hold down Ctrl+C.
  5. Enter the Client number for copy in the Copy Client window.
  6. Select OK.

You might need to get REP Access again. However, you won't be charged due to the same client name and SSN/EIN.

If a client with the same client number already exists, Lacerte will prompt you to replace the existing client with the one being copied. Select Yes to replace the client, No to keep the original client and cancel copying the client, or Cancel to stop the process.
