Lacerte program or a Lacerte pop-up window opens off screen

SOLVEDby Intuit12Updated almost 2 years ago

Follow the steps provided in this article if:

  • Lacerte (or a Lacerte window) opens minimized and won't restore to full screen, or
  • Selecting a Ctrl+E field locks up Lacerte and generates a Windows dinging sound.

This can occur if the Ctrl+E windows open in a different position than they were closed, or if they open off the screen. Windows can open behind the main Lacerte window, making it impossible to select anything. This may also occur with other windows that open in the Lacerte program (for example, the Like Kind Exchange Wizard).

Step 1: Download and install the Lacerte Tool Hub

  1. Close Lacerte.
  2. Download the Lacerte Tool Hub Install file. Save the file somewhere you can find it (your Downloads folder or Windows desktop).
  3. Open the file you downloaded (LacerteToolsHub.exe).
  4. Follow the on-screen steps to install and agree to the terms and conditions.
  5. When the install finishes, double-selecct the icon on your Windows desktop to open the tool hub.

If you can't find the icon, do a search in Windows for Lacerte Tool Hub and select the program.

Step 2: Using the tool in the Lacerte Tool Hub

  1. Open the Lacerte Tool Hub.
  2. Select Program from the left.
  3. Select Reset Display.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions to run the tool.

If Lacerte is opening off screen:

  1. Press Alt+Space.
  2. Press the M key for Move.
  3. Use the arrow keys to move the window until it can be seen.
    • If the monitor setup has changed, moving the window to the left or right will usually cause the window to show up on the screen.
  4. Position the window in the desired location.
  5. When the program is closed, its current position will be saved and the program will re-open in its current location.

If a pop-up window is opening offscreen: some pop-up windows, like the Federal explanation of changes on Screen 59, Amended Return, won't move using the Alt +Space method. Follow these steps to reposition these windows:

  1. Press and hold the Windows key and Shift.
  2. While holding Windows and Shift, press each arrow key, one at a time, to see if the window appears.
  3. Once the window appears, release the keys and position the window in the desired location.
  4. When Lacerte is closed, its current position will be saved and the program will re-open it in its current location.

If the window cannot be repositioned with the steps above:

  1. Close the program.
    • May have to use Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+ Esc) and end the task under the Applications tab.
  2. Press the Windows + R keys to open the Run command.
  3. Type %appdata% in the Search (Run) field.
  4. Press Enter, then open the Lacerte folder on the new window that pops up.
    • For 2008 and prior, open the C:Windows folder.
  5. Rename the configuration (ini) file for that year (e.g., W16tax.ini for 2016 Lacerte).
  6. Re-open the program and attempt to open the same Ctrl+E screen.

If the problem persists:

  1. Close Lacerte.
  2. Right-select the 20YY Lacerte Tax icon and select Properties.
  3. On the shortcut tab, toggle the line Run: to Maximized.
  4. Select OK.

Press the ESC key if the CTRL+E screen doesn't appear initially and then scroll down the input screen and try again.
