"Error Initializing Config" error message when launching Lacerte

SOLVEDby Intuit4Updated October 14, 2022

When launching the Lacerte Tax program, it fails with the following error message (or similar):

  • "Error Initializing Config: Access Violation in module W??Tax.exe"
  • "Error Initializing Config: Access Violation in module vcl60.bpl"
  • "Error Initializing Config: Access Violation at 000000000"

If this happens on one or more workstations, try renaming the Pro*** files. If it happens on all years, change the default printer driver. If the error continues rename the .INI file.

These ProfLog.P? and ProfXO.P? (? = represents the year) files in the Lacerte Tax program's Option Path can be corrupted.

If you are not able to access the drive where the option path is located, contact your network administrator to resolve the network issues.

  1. Navigate through Windows Explorer to C:\Lacerte\??tax where ? = the year of the program.
  2. Locate the NetDir.w?, right click on it and choose "Open With".
  3. Choose Notepad then with it open, note down what the SharedPath is.
  4. Close the NetDir.w? file.
  5. Navigate to the Shared Path using Windows Explorer.
  6. Navigate to the Option?? folder.  (?? = tax year)
  7. Right-click on ProfLog.P? and select Rename.
  8. Rename the file to ProfLog.old and hit Enter.
  9. Right-click on Profxo.p? and select Rename.
  10. Rename the file to Profxo.old and hit Enter.
  11. Launch the Lacerte Tax program.

Performing these steps will reset the Fonts & Colors and Display columns at the top of the screen.

  1. Close Lacerte Tax (all versions) and any other open programs.
  2. Hold down the Windows key and press R to open the Run box.
  3. Copy and paste the below path for the impacted year of Lacerte:
    • 2010-current Lacerte-   %USERPROFILE%\Appdata\Roaming\Lacerte
    • 2009 Lacerte-   %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Application Data\Lacerte
    • 2007-2008 Lacerte-   %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\Lacerte
    • 2006 & below-   C:\Windows
  4. After you paste the path, press Enter to open the folder.
  5. Find the w??Tax.ini for the correct year of Lacerte.
  6. Right-click the .ini file and choose Rename.
  7. Add -old at the end. For example, 2020 would say w20tax.ini-old.
  8. Close the window and see if you can get into Lacerte.

Some anti-virus programs can cause this error message by corrupting the ProfLog or ProfXO files.  To resolve this issue, rename those files as described in the instructions above and add exceptions for Lacerte directories to your anti-virus or firewall program.

For a list of folders to include, see here.

This error may also be resolved by running setup with the /force switch.  To run "setup /force":

  1. While in the Lacerte program, press F10 to open the Technical Support Information window.
  2. Scroll down and look for the System File Path. Highlight the path shown here and go to the Windows Start button.
  3. Paste the path in the Windows Search field and then add taxsetup /force to the end of the path. For example, X:\LacerteYY\TaxSetupYY\TaxSetup.exe /force
  4. Then follow the steps in the installation wizard.
