Generating Form 8814 - Parent's Election to Report Child's Interest and Dividends

Follow these steps to generate Form 8814 and enter the Child's Interest and Dividend Income:

  1. In Screen 44, Parent's Election (8814), locate the General Information section.
  2. Select the Child's information from the First name drop-down menu.

    Note: 
    If the child isn't entered on Screen 2, Dependents Information you won't see the drop-down menu on the First name field.
  3. Scroll down to the Interest Income section.
  4. Enter the applicable information.
  5. Scroll down to the Dividend Income section.
  6. Enter the applicable information.
  7. Select on Add from the left navigation panel to add more children (if applicable).

The Form Will Not Generate if the Child Does Not Meet All of the Following Conditions:

  • The child was under age 19 (or under age 24 if a full-time student) at the end of the current tax year.
  • The child's only income was from interest and dividends, including capital gain distributions and Alaska Permanent Fund dividends.
  • The child's gross income for the current tax year was less than $11,000.
  • The child is required to file a return in the current tax year.
  • The child doesn't file a joint return for the current tax year.
  • There were no estimated tax payments for the child for the current tax year (including any overpayment of tax from his or her prior tax return applied to current year estimated tax).
  • There was no federal income tax withheld from the child?s income.
  • You must also qualify. See 'Parents who qualify to make the election'  Form 8814 Instructions
