Troubleshooting individual e-file diagnostic ref. 10322 for Form 8949

SOLVEDby IntuitLacerte Tax19Updated July 13, 2022

If Form 8949 is generating and you checked the Summary from attached statement box on Screen 17, Dispositions, the following diagnostic will generate in Lacerte:

  • e-file: The Form 8949, Sales and Other Dispositions of Capital Assets or its acceptable substitute must be attached to the Form 8453 or be included with the return as PDF in place of mailing the 8453. (ref. #10322)

The IRS requires an itemized account of transactions reported on the Schedule D to be reported on Form 8949. If the disposition entered is from a summary, the detailed summary must be either attached as a PDF or paper filed with Form 8453.

Follow these steps if the disposition entered isn't from a summary:

  1. Go to Screen 17, Dispositions.
  2. Scroll down to the Schedule D section.
  3. Uncheck the Summary from attached statement box.

Follow these steps to attach a PDF of the summary for a disposition:

  1. Go to Screen 4.4, e-file/PDF Miscellaneous.
  2. Under e-file Miscellaneous, click PDF Attachment.
  3. Select Attach PDF.
  4. Select Browse Files.
  5. Locate the file on your computer and select Open.
  6. Select OK.
  7. Click the arrow in the Link to form (defaults to main form) field.
  8. Click on the + next to Sch D / Form 8949 and choose Form 8949 Exception Reporting Statement.
    • This will prevent Form 8453 from generating.

Follow these steps if you prefer to paper file the summary with Form 8453:

  1. Go to Screen 17, Dispositions.
  2. Scroll down to the Schedule D section.
  3. Make sure you checked the Summary from attached statement box.
    • This will automatically generate Form 8453.
  4. Go to the Forms tab.
  5. Click Print Form.
