Diagnostic Ref. 4509 Paid Preparer Information is Missing

SOLVEDby IntuitLacerte Tax5Updated July 26, 2021

The following diagnostic is generated;

e-file: Paid Preparer information is missing.  Every return must be assigned a preparer. (ref. #4509)
This diagnostic is generating when the Preparer field has been filled out in Screen 1, Client Information.

Solution Description

This diagnostic generates because there is no ERO PIN entered in the Preparer Information in Options.  To enter an ERO PIN in Options:
  1. Click on the Settings menu on the Menu bar.
  2. Select Options.  This will open the User Options window.
  3. In the User Options window, click on the Preparers tab.
  4. Double click on the name of the preparer entered as Paid Preparer in the client file generating the diagnostic.  This will open the Preparer Information window.
  5. Enter a five digit number of any combination in the ERO PIN field.  Please note: the IRS mandates that an ERO PIN cannot be all zero's.
  6. Click OK at the bottom left of the Preparer Information window.
  7. Click OK at the bottom of the User Options window.
  8. Go to the Diagnostics tab to determine that the diagnostic is no longer generating.
If the above steps do not clear the diagnostic, verify the following;
  1. Go to Settings.
  2. Select Options.
  3. Go to the Firm Info tab.
  4. Verify the following information has been completed;
    • Federal I.D. Number
    • Telephone Number
  5. Go to the Preparer Info tab.
  6. Verify a SSN has been entered for each Preparer.

Note:

  • If there is still a problem, go to Screen 1, Client Information.
  • Verify that there is a Preparer listed in the Preparer field.
  • Use the drop down box to link the proper preparer to the return.  Typing in the preparer's name may cause this problem.
  • Having a preparer listed only in the Staff Preparer field will also cause this problem.
  • Note: If there is still a problem, go to Screen 4.4, e-file Miscellaneous, if an Alternate Paid Preparer has been entered the PTIN must also be correctly entered here.
