How to amend an individual return (1040X) in ProConnect Tax

SOLVEDby Intuit290Updated December 20, 2023

This article will assist you with amending an individual return (1040X) in Intuit ProConnect.

New for tax year 2022, e-filed 1040-X returns can receive a refund by direct deposit. Paper filed amendments will still be issued refund checks by mail.

Before you start:

To generate Form 1040X:

If return was efiled and is locked:

  1. Open the original tax return.
  2. Click on Return Actions at top right and choose Amend Return.  This will automatically unlock the original tax return and create a locked return.  Original amounts will automatically be transferred to the amended return screen under As Originally Reported column
  3. Go to the Input Return tab.
  4. Select Miscellaneous Forms.
  5. Select Amended Return (1040-X), then General Information and Federal (1040X).
  6. Enter a 1 in 1=amending state return, if applicable.
  7. Enter the Year to amend (MANDATORY).
  8. Select the Explanation of Changes tab and enter an explanation to print with the return.
  9. Select the Gen. Info. & 1040X tab.
  10. Fill any applicable fields in the Miscellaneous Information section.
  11. Use the regular input screens to make any changes to the return.
    • For example, to report additional wages, go to the Wages, Salaries, Tips (W-2) screen and add a W-2.
    • Don't use the Correct Amount [Override] column unless you're amending a prior-year return in the current year program, or it's absolutely necessary. These overrides will stop any automatic calculation and require you to manually calculate the new tax amount.
  12. Review the 1040X for accuracy using the Check Return tab.

If the return isn't locked:

  1. Create a copy of the original return to save your entries as filed.
  2. Go to the Input Return tab.
  3. Select Miscellaneous Forms.
  4. Select Amended Return (1040-X), then General Information and Federal (1040X).
  5. Mark the checkbox labeled Amending federal return.
  6. A window will open asking if you wish to automatically fill out the As Originally Reported amounts.

    1. Select Yes, transfer data.
  7. Enter a 1 in 1=amending state return, if applicable.
