Resolving Error 54 attempting to e-file in ProSeries

SOLVEDby Intuit8Updated October 30, 2023

If you get Error 54 when e-filing, it may be because the e-filing server has detected that your software isn't up to date. To fix this, there are a few solutions:

Solution 1:

With the new background updater in ProSeries 2021 and newer, the updates may have been downloaded but may not be installed. To resolve this:

  1. Close ProSeries.
  2. Open ProSeries.
  3. Try to e-file again.

Solution 2:

Attempt a manual update:

  1. Open ProSeries.
  2. From the Update menu, choose Update Installed Products.
  3. When the update is complete, you'll be prompted to restart ProSeries.
  4. Close ProSeries.
  5. Open ProSeries.
  6. Try to e-file again.

Solution 3:

To resolve the update if its stuck:

  1. Open ProSeries.
  2. From the Update menu, choose Refresh Updates.
  3. Close ProSeries.
  4. Open ProSeries.
  5. Try to e-file again.

Solution 4:

If solution 1–3 doesn't resolve the error, the specific federal or state product may be damaged.

  1. Identify which federal or state product is generating the error:
    • If you have other returns to e-file see which returns are going through. If all returns for a return type are generating the error, the federal return may be damaged.
  2. Uninstall the damaged federal or state product. See Uninstalling a federal or state product in ProSeries for steps.
  3. Reinstall the federal or state product:
    1. From the Update menu, choose Select and Download New Products.
    2. Add a check to the federal or state return and select Next.
    3. When the update is complete, you'll be prompted to restart ProSeries.
  4. Close ProSeries.
  5. Open ProSeries.
  6. Try to e-file again.
