This article will help to resolve the following e-file critical diagnostic:
- The other state's tax return will have to be printed to PDF and attached to the (Resident State) return.
To resolve this diagnostic, follow these steps:
- Go to the Print tab and select Tax Return.
- Select State/City only from the top options.
- Clear any selected boxes under the Return Options section.
- Select the box File (PDF) in the Client Copy section.
- Select OK and save the file.
After the other state's return is saved as a PDF, it needs to be attached. Refer to Attaching PDF documents to an individual return for e-file (Form 1040) for more information, or follow the steps below.
Required steps needed to reference the other state's tax return for the resident state:
- Go to Screen 4, Electronic Filing.
- Select the PDF Attachment button.
- Select Attach PDF and Browse Files.
- Locate your saved file and select Open > OK.
- Select No under the Send PDF attachment with Federal return.
- Select the box Send PDF attachment with (Resident State) return.
- Select the Form and line number on state return dropdown menu.
- Select the + next to Other State and select Other State Return.
If the other state has no income tax:
- Go to Screen 47, Notes.
- Create a note that says, " does not have an individual income tax return."
- Go to the Forms tab.
- Select Client Notes from the Form menu in the mid-left panel.
- Select Print Form from the top right corner.
- Select the Settings button.
- Clear the box Printer if it's selected.
- Select File (PDF).
- Select OK and save the file.
- Go to Screen 4, Electronic Filing.
- Select the PDF Attachment button.
- Select Attach PDF and Browse Files.
- Locate your saved file and select Open > OK.
- Select No under the Send PDF attachment with federal return.
- Select the box Send PDF attachment with (Resident State) return.
- Select the Form and line number on state return dropdown menu.
- Select the + next to Other State and select Other State Return.
