I filed a Form 1023 for a private foundation, and check the wrong box, and the IRS approved the non-profit as a public charity when we wanted a private foundation. When I realized the error soon after the filing of the Form 1023, I was told to just correct it on the first filed Form 990-PF for the Private Foundation. We have tried this, however, we are still having trouble getting the IRS to recognize the entity as a private foundation and not a public charity.
Has anyone else ran into this issue? If so, how did you resolve it?
