Resolving the error The uninstaller cannot be run while ProSeries is use.

This article will help when you receive the error "The uninstaller cannot be run while ProSeries 20YY is use. Please quit ProSeries 20YY before attempting to uninstall."

Before you start:

  • This article references default installation paths and uses YY to reference the tax year in 20YY format. C: will always indicate the local drive and X: will always indicate the network drive.
  • Some steps will require you to access hidden files and folders on your Windows PC. Click here for instruction on how to make those files and folders visible.

There are a few different solutions to this issue, the most common are listed first:

Restart the computer

  1. Close the error.
  2. Restart the computer.
  3. Attempt to uninstall again.
  4. If the error appears again, continue to the next section.

Remove the lock file:

  1. Open Windows File Explorer.
  2. Browse to the ProSeries Common folder.
    • For ProSeries Basic the default is C:\BasWinYY\Common
    • For ProSeries Professional stand alone the default is C:\ProWinYY\Common
    • For ProSeries Professional network the default is X:\ProNetYY\Common
  3. Delete the ~Users.lck and Users.net files.
  4. Attempt to uninstall again.
  5. If the error appears again, continue to the next section.

Make sure all processes are shut down:

  1. Open the Windows Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
  2. If you do not see tabs, select More details.
  3. Go to the Processes tab.
  4. Select the ProSeries folder.
  5. See if ProTaxYY.exe, ProSeriesUpdate.exe or TaskSched.exe are running.
  6. If any of them are running, select it and click End Process.
  7. Attempt to uninstall again.
  8. If the error appears again, continue to the next section.

Remove any temp files from the Data folder:

  1. Open Windows File Explorer.
  2. Browse to the ProSeries Data folder.
    • For ProSeries Basic the default is C:\BasWinYY\YYData
    • For ProSeries Professional stand alone the default is C:\ProWinYY\YYData
    • For ProSeries Professional network the default is X:\ProNetYY\YYData
  3. Delete any files that start with ~ or $.
  4. Attempt to uninstall again.
