This article will help when you receive the error "The uninstaller cannot be run while ProSeries 20YY is use. Please quit ProSeries 20YY before attempting to uninstall."
Before you start:
- This article references default installation paths and uses YY to reference the tax year in 20YY format. C: will always indicate the local drive and X: will always indicate the network drive.
- Some steps will require you to access hidden files and folders on your Windows PC. Click here for instruction on how to make those files and folders visible.
There are a few different solutions to this issue, the most common are listed first:
Restart the computer
- Close the error.
- Restart the computer.
- Attempt to uninstall again.
- If the error appears again, continue to the next section.
Remove the lock file:
- Open Windows File Explorer.
- Browse to the ProSeries Common folder.
- For ProSeries Basic the default is C:\BasWinYY\Common
- For ProSeries Professional stand alone the default is C:\ProWinYY\Common
- For ProSeries Professional network the default is X:\ProNetYY\Common
- Delete the ~Users.lck and Users.net files.
- Attempt to uninstall again.
- If the error appears again, continue to the next section.
Make sure all processes are shut down:
- Open the Windows Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- If you do not see tabs, select More details.
- Go to the Processes tab.
- Select the ProSeries folder.
- See if ProTaxYY.exe, ProSeriesUpdate.exe or TaskSched.exe are running.
- If any of them are running, select it and click End Process.
- Attempt to uninstall again.
- If the error appears again, continue to the next section.
Remove any temp files from the Data folder:
- Open Windows File Explorer.
- Browse to the ProSeries Data folder.
- For ProSeries Basic the default is C:\BasWinYY\YYData
- For ProSeries Professional stand alone the default is C:\ProWinYY\YYData
- For ProSeries Professional network the default is X:\ProNetYY\YYData
- Delete any files that start with ~ or $.
- Attempt to uninstall again.
