Kill the automatic update feature in 2021 ProSeries

I want the ability to update the software when I want to update, not when Intuit decides it's time to update.  I have been around here long enough to watch enough disasters when programs are updated and folks are screwed for days because "we are aware of the unexpected behavior and it will be fixed in a future update".  I don't care if I have to stack up a few returns before I can e-file because the program "isn't up to date", but I don't ever want to be one of those folks that has a program that is completely unusable because of an update.

There, I threw a penny in the wishing well.  If it cost a dime, I wouldn't have wasted my time.  And officially, I consider this a defect in the program - it's the best fit for the choices we have in the list of "idea labels".

I haven't downloaded it yet, but this article SEEMS to indicate you can disable it.

ProSeries Professional only: Background Updates replaces the Task Scheduler. ProSeries Task Scheduler will be disabled and won't run to check for updates while Background Updates are enabled.

Another interesting thing is that the article points out they already have "known issues" with it.  Sigh.

I transferred files to the organizer yesterday and I read the article ---------- but the article must apply to 2018 because it doesn't seem to apply to 2021 - at least not yet.

You mean you leave your computer connected to the Internet when you are running the program?

I think you have been able to update at your discretion.  Yearly, I've been surprised by a few EF rejects because my software had not been updated 😬 that day.  Easy fix, and worth it to back up first then apply the update.  I remember the year or two when ProSeries would override my form charge lines with additions instead of inserting the new lines.

Iron Man, you can do this now... I have never done the automatic update, I always do the updates when I want to, and like you said if there is a problem with an update then I can wait a few days... somewhere when you are initially downloading software each year, they ask you if you want to do the automatic update, or how often to check for it, or something like that... I have never checked that automatic update so I can do it manually every year.. I think once you tell it not to do the automatic update, I think it then transfers that answer/information to every future year.

I have always shut the automatic update off ——- until the 2021 program.  It’s now on auto pilot and I don’t see anyway now to take over the flight controls.

I wait until January to download the program having seen what trouble the early release can cause.
