If the payment was scheduled for the future (i.e. 4/15/23) it should be cancelled.  IRS info can be found here:

https://www.irs.gov/payments/pay-taxes-by-electronic-funds-withdrawal

To make the replacement payment just have the client use IRS Direct Pay:

https://www.irs.gov/payments/direct-pay

There may be similar info available online if you have a similar problem with state(s).

The bank bounces the direct deposit back to the IRS.  The IRS messes around with it for a bit and then they eventually mail out a check.

Oops, you said payments.  If there isn't a correct account number the payments will remain in the bank forever --------------- or until the bank folds - whichever comes first.

I was trying to send a payment, not receive a payment.

Somewhere it said I will get a rejection notice, but I have not in five days.

The client will get a notice that their payment did not go through; not you.

Have client make the payment on irs.gov before the deadline.
