Unable to EFile NYS MFJ with Spouse having Temp Tin Issued by the NYS

2019 MFJ Tax Return (Fed + NYS) where TP has SSN and the SP has applied to the IRS for ITIN.  The NYS has issued a Temp Tin to the SP which is typically “TF-7 Digit Number” i.e. TF-xxxxxxx.

Since the ITIN is still awaited from the IRS, trying to EFile the NYS tax return with the SP having NYS Temp Pin as above.  But the Pro Series repeatedly rejects the NYS EFile with a weird error message.

Tried to EFile using the NYS Temp Tin without the dash, but no good.

Phoned the NYS Practitioners Hotline which said the NYS does allow EFile of such tax returns and it could be a tax software glitch.

Spent about 2 hours on phone with Pro Series, but no resolution of the problem.

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks.

Raj

That temporary number is issued by NY merely to identify a particular NRA's who do not have an SSN/TIN with the returns he/she filed with NRA or "Applied For" written in place of an SSN/ITIN.

Even if NY accepts this temporary number for tax return filing, you still can't e-file the NYS return with it primarily because NY is a Piggyback/State Only return which must go through the IRS' system and the IRS requires valid SSN/ITIN's for both spouses filing MFJ.  It is not a software glitch but hard-coded in the IRS' MeF Schema.

If you must file the MFJ NYS return before an ITIN is issued, your only option would be to file that on paper.
