Part year state returns

I have asked a similar question before, but hoping someone may be able to shed light on this situation at this time

RI residents as of 12/31.  MFJ return FED.

1 was PY MA

1 was PY CT

Both are PY RI now.

IF I am reading correctly, RI return has to be MFJ if they both live in RI

Allocation will not let me have the same date of residency twice , one for each spouse. 

Can I  do separate returns for states of CT and MA, and if so can I then do a MFJ for RI. 

You can tell i am completely confused as to how to handle this the correct and best way.
