Can I e-file a 2017 return with my 2017 software? I have retired so I have not purchased 2018 software.

Nope.  Without your current year fast path fee paid up Intuit shuts down printing and e-filing new returns for years you have already paid for.  It’s the nastiest thing that Intuit ever came up with and a lot of folks have voiced their displeasure over the stupid idea ———— but it still lingers on anyway.

No. You might consider ProConnect Tax Online. There is no FastPath. Input is VERY different. Pricing is aimed at low usage. https://proconnect.intuit.com/tax-online/ https://proconnect.intuit.com/tax-online/pricing/You can convert from ProSeries https://proconnect.intuit.com/proseries/data-conversion/

Here's wishing you many Happy Returns
