I am a MA resident with NY income. The full income amount is listed under both states on the W-2 box 16 and the income is showing as double on MA return. How do I correct

Are you using ProSeries for your client?

You seem to be lost on the internet.

You’ve come to a Peer User community for Intuit Tax Preparation products supporting tax preparation professionals using ProSeries, Proconnect and Lacerte , and you may be looking for support as an individual taxpayer. Please visit the TurboTax Help site for support.

Thanks.

Hi,

No I am not lost on the internet. I use ProSeries to prepare tax returns and have been preparing returns for over 15 years. This is the first time I have seen a client's W-2 report the same full income in box 16 for two different states. I guess I shouldn't have say "I' in the question and should have replaced it with my client. I feel the solution is the W-2 needs to be corrected with the MA income reported as zero and the full income amount remaining under NY. I am curious if other tax preparers have encountered the same issue and how they resolved it.

Thank you,

Sarah

It's not unusual for 2020 W-2 to report the same amount for two States due to remote work: State of residence and State of Employer. It's likely the W2 is not wrong.

It seems to be more of an issue of how Proseries is bringing in the MA (state of residency income). On the MA return the full gross income is coming in from the 1040 like it should and then bringing in the income from the one W-2 with two states included twice. If I do not included income in box 16 for MA then the return is correct.
