on the federal information worksheet, why is there dependent information to enter..even in the detail, i know child tax credits, education credits come into play but these children would technically be dependents, right?

I don't think dependents are gone, only the exemption for them.  That information would be needed to see if they qualify for EIC, etc and whether or not that dependent qualifies for the $2,000.00 child tax credit or the $500.00 credit for other dependents.
