Dependent Unemployment

Does a dependent on their parent's taxes have to file their own taxes, with Unemployment income only?  If so, is there a minimum unearned income requirement?

Scenario 1.  Dependent with 13,000 Unemployment Income and did not have any taxes withdrawn. If he files, he will owe above $1000 in taxes.

Thank you!

If it is generating tax, why are you thinking they wouldn't have to file?

If the dependent has over $1100 of unearned income (such as unemployment), yes, they definitely need to file.

However, owing $1000 on the $13,000 of unemployment seems wrong.  It seem quite likely it should be noticeably MORE than that, especially after factoring in the Kiddie Tax.

Is that all?  That sounds pretty good.  You filled out everything on the 8615, right?

Best place to find answers to "Who must file" are the instructions.  See Chart B on page 10 (2020).

PS:  What about the W-2?  There's a W-2 also, right?  Certainly there can't be unemployment without being laid off from a regular job, right? /s
