I agree with you, as I doubt they are providing over half of his/her support. See this link from Dept of The Army. https://s3.amazonaws.com/usma-media/inline-images/Parents/pdf/usma_taxinfo_2019filing.pdf.

You asked can the parents claim a child who is away from home at a military academy.  Of course you left out child's age.  You can claim a child away from home at an educational institution.  So they can claim the child provided the child is under 19.  The support test is only that child did not provide over 50% of support.  Parents do not have to prove over 50% of support.

Or are you asking can clients claim college tuition credit?

The child is 18 years old and receives a W-2 form from the Army

Of course West Point and the other military schools are colleges.  They offer majors in Chemical and Civil Engineering, Economics, Foreign Languages, etc.  Some of the best colleges in the country.

Who cares about science and language courses?  They have football teams, that's what matters.

If the student entered last summer, chances are the parents provided more than half the support, even with the advance payment of $8K+ that cadets get for initial expenses.  But in future years, with the military providing cradle-to-grave benefits (the only socialism left in America) and a salary, they should buy a Tesla instead if they're looking for tax credits.
