What changed for 2018 that makes them qualify for it now, but not when the return was originally prepared?

Yes, but the audit risk is about 10 times higher than it would normally be because the IRS is more suspicious of the return due to the EIC.

If you do amend the return for EIC, make sure you include the 8867 and the Due Diligence documents with the return when you mail it. School letter, on School Letterhead, verifying Enrollment and Residency is the most acceptable proof for the IRS. If not a child or not in school, a letter from the Doctor's office verifying DOB, residency etc is acceptable.

If you don't have the documents, get them, because the IRS will ask for them on an amended return for EIC before they issue any refund.
