Can I correct an incorrect social security number on a state return that has already been submitted?

Client gave me their SSN and it was one digit off. I had them double check before I submitted and they okay it. It was rejected by the IRS but New Jersey accepted it. I was able to correct the return for federal but not state. How do I correct this?

California has been pretty good in the past of correcting it over the phone at the practitioner hotline.

It appears NJ has a similar hotline https://njcpa.org/stay-informed/topics/article/2017/08/09/navigating-the-new-jersey-division-of-taxa... I would give it at least 2 weeks before calling. If that fails, then definitely an amended return is in order.

California does stuff like that too!  Amended return is the only thing you can do.
